What is SEO?

The Secrets of the Digital Web

SEO or search engine optimisation is the process of making your site rank higher on the SERP (search engine results page) allowing you to reach more people or gain higher organic traffic. With so many sites and businesses, people need a way of telling which sites are trustworthy and reliable, Google’s algorithm handles this by sorting sites by relevancy speed and other factors. So now you know what it is let’s talk about how to use it.

Where does SEO start?

SEO starts when you want to increase the amount of organic traffic you gain by choosing keywords or key phrases that have a high search volume. But how do you rank high for a keyword when others want to do the same? SEO is all about our competing with the others you do this by constantly one-upping their content it is almost like a game of chess reacting to one another’s attempts to rank higher. The pages that tend to get the most organic traffic tend to be long-form content such as Blogs and short-form content such as Landing pages. Blogs are great for when consumers seem to have informational intent behind their searches e.g. keywords such as SEO, or what is SEO are all examples of informational intent. Landing pages are great for information but are also used to try and convert in the same instance ( an instance is a time a person is on the same page in one session).

What types of SEO are there?

Before I tell you about how to use SEO to your advantage and give you some tips you need to understand the 4 types of SEO. which are as follows

  1. On-page SEO
  2. Off-page SEO
  3. local SEO
  4. Technical SEO

On-page SEO is as you have guessed to do with the website it is all actions that can be taken directly on the website to boost traffic. Off-page SEO includes things like Backlinks and social media these are actions that can be taken outside of our website to boost rank and domain authority ( how trustworthy your site is the higher your domain authority the more likely your site is to rank higher above others). Local SEO is anything that can do to boost your searches in your local area, this is very helpful for businesses with physical offices or for a business that serves a local area e.g. London. Local SEO can help boost your rank in the map pack as well.

Local SEO, What is SEO

Technical SEO is the process of optimising your site and servers to allow your web pages to be crawled by search engine spiders(bots) this allows search engines to know what each page is about and can evaluate your ranking based on what they find.

Content types for SEO

SEO covers a wide range of areas and can be used all across your site on almost everything SEO is the cornerstone to organic traffic so while there is better ones for SEO such as long-form and short-form such as Blogs and Landing pages generally anything you write on a page will be counted as content so it’s best to optimise everything you write down to ensure they are all as optimised as they can. Google spiders will crawl your site and pages every time you update something and can then re-evaluate your position in accordance to what it finds (PS even comments count as an update to your page).

Keywords what are they and how can I find them?

Keywords are specific words or phrases that you want to rank high for on the SERP and get high organic traffic for. There are two types of keywords short and long-form keywords, short keywords normally include one too two words such as wooden watch long-form keywords tend to be longer and have a lower search volume but have a clearer consumer intent such as high-quality luxury watch. With every keyword there are some very important metrics to look out for:

  1. Search volume
  2. Difficulty
  3. CPC
  4. Global search vol

Search volume is normally measured monthly and shows the number of people in a certain area that search for that phrase. The difficulty score shows you on a scale out of 100 on how hard or how much effort you would have to put into ranking high for that keyword (these tend to be really broad keywords such as shoes or watches). CPC or cost per click is a measurement used to show you how much it would cost per click if you use PPC (pay-per click) advertising instead of organically getting results. Global search volume you should only pay attention if your interested in marketing your services to another country.

How to gain content ideas

Content is probably the hardest part about SEO as you need content to rank high. lets say your keyword is wooden watches but how would you use that to write content allow me to tell you.

Step one – Figure out the intent behind the keyword

There is two things you can do to figure this out, the first way is to imagine your the consumer searching for this and try and figure out what your looking for the key phrase wooden watches suggests that there is buying intent or so product pages would most likely come up in the SERP. the second why would be to google search for your keyword and analyse what your competitors are placing high in the SERP for that keyword.

Search Intent, What is SEO

Step two – how beat your competitors

Now you have identified your customer intent and your content all that’s left to do is write a piece of content that’s better and stronger. For example lets say the top results was 7 reasons to buy a wooden watch and they had two images and no comment section. to beat it you would need to do one better so go for 10 reasons and a comment section and more then two images. SEO is all about offering the better content for the consumer.
